OUTINGS: Thursday 19 June 2025; Visit to Deal in Kent
Firstly as this was the last outing they are organising, to thank Denise and Ian for 4 years hard work trying to satisfy all the differing requirements and interests of our membership. Well done.
With a little hazy cloud and slight breeze from the sea the temperatures were much more pleasant than might have been expected. The group went off in numerous directions - most for a cup of coffee. The beach front eventually led to Deal Castle and although not a major edifice it did contain some significant history. Specifically, built by Henry VIII in 1539/40 to ward off those French invaders and when Deal was a significant trading location. As trade moved to other larger ports and the threat of invasion receded, Deal Castle became a largely ceremonial location as it is today.
The pier was interesting with several fishermen, generally putting their catches back into the sea. At the end of the pier was a nice bistro type restaurant with good views to the Deal seafront.
There were many other interesting and quaint locations around Deal, such as the Time Ball Tower, reminiscent of the one at Greenwich observatory. Close by an almost derelict old cinema showed how times had changed. There were many places to eat throughout the town so nobody went hungry.
There is space for more photos and if members are inclined to offer their own view/write-ups of the visit.
Best wishes, Alan
