The Light of the Day by Graham Swift
We read this book but it was not generally enjoyed by the group, finding it very slow moving and “ploddy”. It was about a disgraced policeman turned private eye. He had a relationship with a client convicted of murdering her husband. I THINK that at the end the reader is expected to decide what should have happened. My bete noire (in literature not in life). VERY DISAPPOINTED was the group decision.
Convenience store woman By Sayaka Murata
This was described as a “quirky novel“ about a 36 year-old woman in Japan, who had worked part time in the same store since leaving education. She had neither married nor reproduced which did not seem to fit with the Japanese social norm. It came across that housing in Japan was short in supply and not of a high standard.
The novel has also been described as “funny, compelling and wonderful”. No one in our group agreed with any of this. “Boring” was one description, “odd” was another. I tried hard to find a point to it wondering if it were satire or a reflection on society but I decided that it was completely pointless.
Free Love By Tessa Hadley.
We all enjoyed the novel and read it very quickly. We would describe it as a holiday read, entertaining from beginning to end. It is almost a romp but not quite.
