202603 Cherry Orchard Memorial Park

WILDLIFE: Thursday 12th March 2026; Visit to Cherry Orchard Memorial Park

Good afternoon everyone

I hope you have recovered from our trip on Thursday - talk about Winnie the Pooh and the blustery day!!  But at least it wasn't raining.  Unfortunately there wasn't too much wildlife to see.  Some beautiful trees coming into bud of all sorts.  We saw and heard Sky Larks. There was evidence of mole activity , also a huge box on a tree which was probably for owls but something had been gnawing at the entrance.

The park is very large and we didn't get to venture up to the lake as it was quite a long way according to a helpful walker, so we can save that for another time in better weather. There are a couple of other entrances so perhaps we park nearer to the lake then.

We ended our ramble with a very nice and reasonably priced lunch at the Strawberry Fields. Well worth a visit.

Just to remind you that I probably won’t be joining you next month as my daughter and grandchildren are coming over for 3 weeks.

We had some sad news on Thursday as Dave and Gill will not be re-joining the U3A membership, they will be greatly missed.  Their last outing with us will be in May.  Thank you both for all your help and  input.

Here are our sightings: Birds - Skylark, Blue Tit, Great Tit, Magpie, Seagull (? Species), Wood Pigeon, Goldfinch, Robin,

Plants - Hemlock, Oxford Ragwort, Red Dead Nettle, Red Campion, Primula (garden escapes), Goat Willow (pussy willow), Cherry, Buddleia, Silver Birch, Oak, Blackthorn ( in flower), Hawthorn, Elder.

Other Wildlife - Bumblebee, Turkey Tail Fungus, “Fairy Rings’ in the grass caused by fungus.

Keep healthy, best wishes Janet
